Dispatches from somewhere else

Adventure stories in this archive are almost always someone reporting back. The structure is inherently epistolary: a character is somewhere the reader is not, sending updates to someone at home, and the distance between the two is the engine. It is the oldest shape in written fiction and it works unmodified in a chat window.

What this format adds is latency. A reply that takes two days is a plot event. A message that arrives out of order tells you something went wrong. Writers working in this category tend to use timestamps deliberately, and the stories that rate best are the ones where the gaps carry as much as the text.

Chapters here run longer than the archive average, because a dispatch is a paragraph rather than a line. Sorting by chapter count will find the sustained journeys; there are fewer of them than in romance or drama, but they tend to be finished.
