The messages stop, and that is the story

Horror and text messaging were made for each other, and the archive reflects it. The medium supplies the two things the genre needs most: an unreliable narrator you cannot see, and silence you can measure. A thread that goes quiet for three chapters is doing something no prose paragraph can.

The stories here divide roughly into two kinds. The first is the found-thread: a conversation recovered after the fact, where the reader knows from the outset that it ends. The second plays out live, and depends on the reader believing there is still time. Both are well represented; the found-thread stories tend to rate higher, probably because the format flatters them.

These are among the shortest stories in the archive; most run under six chapters, because the effect does not survive being stretched. If you have twenty minutes, this is the category that will use them best.
